This Freedom House study examines and codes all political transitions that have ocurred since 1972, the beginning of what political scientists call the "Third wave" of democratization. In all, 67 transitions were identified and coded based on the 33-year time series and narrative data of the Freedeom in the World Survey. The report was conducted in collaboration with the International Center on Nonviolent conflict. The purposes of the study is to determine whether key cahracteristics of the transition are related to- and correlate with - the type of post-transition state that emerges. The study rigoously tests the hypothesis that regime/system changes precipitated by strong, cohesive nonviolent civic coalitions are diposed toward the emergence of durable democratic government. ...
