Summary:
One way to avoid killing each other in the name of God, so the theory goes, is to understand what each other believes. Smith, a diocesan priest and Burr (both justice and peace studies, U. of St. Thomas) works from the current world views of a range of faith and belief, ranging from Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, Christians, Muslims, Native American traditionalists, and Marxists. They then cover several critical debates that cross over from belief into politics, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Christian social teaching, liberation theologies, active nonviolence and the "Just War" debate. Along with very accessible descriptions of the various sets of beliefs, which the authors manage to deliver with a remarkable lack of bias, they also provide a very good bibliography that includes significant materials on comparative religion, peace work and justice issues. They also include a comprehensive glossary.
