Summary:

This text offers an approach to intercultural communication that integrates the strengths of theory and practice in the fields of communication and international relations. Examples are drawn from global current affairs, politics, and diplomacy. While the text is aimed at students and professionals in international relations, it will also be of interest to those in business. Part 1 defines intercultural communication and how and why we study it, reviews dominant theories of intercultural communication, and looks at aspects such as personal and group identity and the impact of technology and the media. Part 2 gives a history of the study of intercultural communication from social science, interpretive, critical, and dialectic approaches, integrating ideas from political science, anthropology, and psychology. Part 3 examines intercultural communication processes and technologies in verbal, non-verbal, visual, and mass communication. Part 4 discusses ethical issues in intercultural communication and global citizenship. The text is illustrated with b&w photos. Sadri teaches international relations and Flammia teaches technical communication at the University of Central Florida. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
