Summary:
Collectively, the 16 chapters of this work presented by Frerks (conflict prevention and conflict management, Utrecht U., the Netherlands) and Godewijk (co-founder, Cedar International, Centre for Dignity and Rights, at T.M.C. Asser Institute for International Law, the Netherlands) seek to draw connections between human security--the security of individuals and communities--and state- based international security concerns and pursue alternative modes for thinking about security and related issues, particularly as they relate to global, national, and local forms of discourse and agency. The papers explore such issues as the connections between inequality, technology, and human right; local discourse on war-related resource predation in sub-Saharan Africa; terrorism and human security in the Middle East; alternatives to hegemonic discourses of globalization (specifically critiquing Thomas Friedman's The World Is Flat); incorporating environmental concerns into governance and national planning; the role of discourse and governance in the HIV/AIDS epidemic; and the quest for humane global governance.
